Foundations

Fifteen minutes here saves the term.

  1. Give every class a bin

    2 min

One place per class, so nothing has to be filed twice.

    • Open Library and make a bin for each class you are taking or teaching.
    • Create notebooks inside the bin — one per unit works better than one per term.
    • Drag a notebook between bins whenever a class reorganises; nothing is lost.

Bins are the only filing decision Casebound asks you to make. Everything after this — contents, page numbers, search — builds itself from what you write.

    Open your library
  2. Let the contents build themselves

    3 min

A navigable table of contents without maintaining one.

    • Give a page a title and it starts a new section in the contents.
    • Leave the next page's title empty and it continues that section — label it if you want it named.
    • Press / anywhere on a page for headings, lists, tables, images, maths and study cards.

A titled page starts a section; an untitled one continues it. That single rule is what keeps long notebooks navigable without anyone maintaining an outline by hand.

  3. Let Recall Lane do the revising

    3 min

Spaced review built from work you have already done.

    • Highlight a sentence worth keeping, or drop in a study card with the / menu.
    • Open Recall Lane; anything you marked is waiting, oldest and most overdue first.
    • Answer Forgot, Hard, Good or Easy — Space reveals a card, 1–4 grade it.

Nothing here is authored twice. A highlight is already you saying “this matters”, so it becomes the prompt; every card keeps a link back to the page it came from. The schedule stays on your device.

    Open Recall Lane
  4. Find the thought again

    2 min

Search that lands you on the page where the thinking happened.

    • Press Ctrl/⌘ K to search across every notebook you have.
    • Press Ctrl/⌘ F to find and replace inside the page you are on.
    • Open the contents panel to jump between sections of a long notebook.
    Try search

Presenting

Casebound presents from the notebook itself — no deck to rebuild.

  1. Smart Readout

    3 min

Reveal one sentence at a time, at reading pace.

    • Start presenting, then turn on Smart Readout in the top bar (or press R).
    • Press → to type in the next sentence. Press → again while it is still animating to finish it instantly.
    • Press ← to step back a sentence, and use the speed pill to set the pace from 0.75× to 2×.

The room reads the sentence you are on instead of racing to the bottom of the page. Reduced-motion settings are respected: the sentence appears whole rather than typing.

  2. Emphasis Ink

    1 min

Circle a word mid-sentence without touching the document.

    • Press E while presenting, then draw straight on the page.
    • Marks fade on their own after a few seconds — there is no eraser to find.
    • Press E again to put the pen away and hand clicks back to the page.

Ink is drawn in a layer above the page. The notebook is never modified, so nothing you draw while presenting can be saved by accident.

  3. Audience Follow

    3 min

The room follows on their own devices, at their own pace.

    • While presenting, open Follow and start a session.
    • Show the QR code or share the link — nobody needs an account to watch.
    • Viewers stay in step with your page and sentence, and can turn a page to read on their own, then rejoin with one tap.

This is the accessibility feature disguised as a presentation feature. Anyone who reads at a different pace can fall behind deliberately and catch up without asking you to wait.

  4. Presenter View

    2 min

Your notes and what is coming next, where only you can see them.

    • Plug in a second screen. The Presenter view button appears in the top bar only when one is genuinely attached.
    • Click it, then drag the window to your other display.
    • You get the next sentence, the next page, an elapsed timer and the controls; the audience sees only the page.

A projector that mirrors your laptop counts as one screen, which is why the button stays hidden — opening notes there would put them on the wall.

For teachers

Distribute, differentiate and respond without leaving the notebook.

  1. Send work that arrives with its context

    3 min

Students open the assignment already in the right bin.

    • Create a class, then add students by invitation or join code.
    • Build an assignment from a notebook and distribute it to the class.
    • Offer supported variants so a student who needs a different version gets it without being singled out.
    Open classes
  2. Respond beside the sentence

    2 min

Comments anchored to the passage they are about.

    • Open a student's submission from the review queue.
    • Select the passage you are responding to and leave feedback there.
    • Return the work; the student sees your comment next to their own words.
    Open assignments

Comfort and safety

The settings worth changing on day one.

  1. Make it easier to read

    2 min

Reading comfort is a setting, not a diagnosis.

    • In Settings, try the dyslexia-friendly reading font and the high-contrast mode.
    • Turn on distraction-free by default if a full page of chrome pulls your attention.
    • Use read aloud on any page, and set the speech rate to something you can follow.
    Open settings
  2. Know where your work lives

    2 min

    Local first, cloud for recovery.

    • Pages autosave to this device as you type, so a dropped connection costs nothing.
    • With an account, work syncs to the cloud and comes back if the device does not.
    • Export a notebook or a full backup at any time from the notebook menu.

If the same notebook is edited in two places, Casebound keeps a conflict copy rather than picking a winner. You will never lose the version you did not choose.
